Galaxy S7 Edge vs Moto Z2 Play: Which is better?

With the launch of the Galaxy S8 and even the Galaxy Note 8, buying an older Samsung premium handset becomes more interesting for those who don't want to spend a lot. In this case, the Galaxy S7 Edge may look perfect with its Game Tools and other features, but with so many quality middlemen released this year, is it still worth giving preference to? Moto Z2 Play, for example, hit the market a few months ago, can be found at a great price, and has similar configurations to the S7 Edge, making the debate between Galaxy S7 Edge vs Moto Z2 Play essential.

If you're curious about how they compare, just check out our list of Moto Z2 Play and Galaxy S7 Edge configuration details - one of the best alternatives to the Galaxy Note 7 - just below!

1. Design

The design and overall look of the two smartphones is quite different, as the S7 Edge is very similar to other Samsung smartphones, with curved edges and a glass panel on the back. Since Moto Z2 Play has a more common look on the front, but has a metal back that gives a more comfortable feel in the hand.

It is worth mentioning that the Z2 Play is much thinner and has a protruding camera, but only because it has support for several modules that can be attached to the back.

2. Display

The Galaxy S7 Edge offers a 5.5 inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2, 560 x 1, 960 pixels. The Moto Z2 Play also has a 5.5 inch Super AMOLED display, but its 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution.

Obviously, the resolution is much better on the S7 Edge, but it is important to say that the color balance is more balanced and realistic on Moto Z2 Play.

3. Operating System

As an older device, the Galaxy S7 Edge comes with Android Marshmallow installed, but can now be upgraded to one of the initial Android Nougat versions currently. Moto Z2 Play comes with the latest version of Android Nougat and is already being tested for the Android Oreo update, something that may not happen with the S7 Edge.

Other than that, we have to mention that the S7 Edge has a well-altered version of Android, while the Z2 Play is one of the purest versions of the operating system that can be found on a device not manufactured by Google.

4. Battery

The Galaxy S7 Edge offers a very impressive 3, 600 mAh capacity, which is expected from a premium smartphone, but the Lenovo handset is not far behind.

Moto Z2 Play has a load of 3, 000 mAh, which seems a lot worse compared, but we have to remember that it does not need as many features as its competitor and this makes its load last even longer than the S7. Remember that the Galaxy S8 itself has a battery of 3, 000 mAh, so it is possible to have a better notion like this.

5. Camera

In theory, the cameras of both devices seem to offer the same thing: A 12 megapixel rear camera capable of recording 4K video and a 5 megapixel front camera capable of recording Full HD video.

In practice, it is possible to see better performance of the Galaxy S7 Edge simply because it has better stability and aperture of f / 1.7 against f / 2.2 of Moto Z2 Play (for cameras, the smaller the aperture number, the better the quality of images).

Still, if you are willing to buy the camera module from Moto Z2 Play, the quality of your images can be significantly improved and you will have access to its analog zoom.

6. Performance

In terms of performance, the difference is small. The Galaxy S7 Edge has Samsung's own Exynos 8890 processor and 4 GB of RAM. Moto Z2 Play has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor and also has 4 GB of RAM.

Basically, they can handle any heavier application or game you might want to use, and the amount of RAM is enough to accomplish different tasks at the same time without worrying.

7. Storage

When it comes to storage, there are not many surprises. The Galaxy S7 Edge has 32 GB and 64 GB versions, while Moto Z2 Play only has a 64 GB version. Both devices have a micro SD card slot of up to 256 GB.

Importantly, the 32 GB version of the S7 Edge is much more expensive than the 64 GB version of Z2 Play, as you can see below.

8. Availability

The two devices will arrive in Brazil shortly after their international releases, but the Moto Z2 is much easier to find today because it is newer. The Galaxy S7 Edge is still found, but its stock is already more limited and the price remains high even with its successors being sold here.

9. Price

Despite being launched at a much higher price, the Galaxy S7 Edge can be found today for just about $ 1, 900 in most Brazilian stores. Already Moto Z2 Play can be purchased for $ 1, 400 with one of its modules (usually the speaker or extra battery) included.

10. What is it worth?

Although the Galaxy S7 Edge offers a slightly better screen and camera, the price difference between the two handsets is not worth it. Even with more battery capacity than the Z2 Play, the S7 Edge's screen consumes more charge and needs to be charged well before its competitor.

Other than that, Moto Z2 Play will receive Android updates longer and still have the advantage of camera modules, speakers, battery and projector. With these factors in mind, the Lenovo device turns out to be the best choice for most users.
