Learn how to reduce data usage in WhatsApp in 5 steps.

WhatsApp is one of the few applications that can really be very useful when we are away from home. Whether to communicate with family or friends or even to give important warning to co-workers. Of course, you can't always count on an available Wi-Fi network, so most people use the app with 3G or 4G enabled. The problem is that it can waste your available data in a very short time if you are not careful. With this in mind, we have listed how you can reduce data usage in WhatsApp in just 5 steps. You can check it out below!

1. Disable file download

To get started, you should definitely turn off downloading files sent in the app when you are not connected to Wi-Fi. You will still be able to download any files sent manually, but the app will not automatically take action when you are using 3G.

To do this, go to the application settings and click the "Data and storage" option. Then choose the option “When using data network” and disable all options available for automatic download.

2. Do not send media files

Not only should you avoid downloading files sent to you from WhatsApp, you should also restrict the number of photos and videos you send to your contacts. When uploading files of this type, you will also be spending your data during upload. If it's urgent, it's not that much of a problem, but ideally avoid it if you really want to save your data.

3. Disable backup

Another thing you should disable is backup while using 3G. Because the app often uploads to the cloud from time to time, this can happen well when you're not connected to Wi-Fi.

To avoid the situation, go to WhatsApp settings, click on “Conversations” and then “Conversation Backup” then. Then just click on the "Back up to" option and select "Wi-Fi only."

4. Do not make voice or video calls

It may be obvious to some, but remember that voice and video calls use up a lot of 3G data in a short time. Therefore, you should avoid them whenever possible, especially if you are not near a Wi-Fi network.

This is true for outgoing or incoming calls, so you may want to decline them if necessary or only accept them in Wi-Fi environments. Still, there is a way around the situation, as you can see in the next topic.

5. Reduce data usage on calls

As we mentioned above, we know that there are situations when you may need to make or answer calls with mobile data. Fortunately, WhatsApp offers an option to reduce data used during calls.

To check the option, go to the app settings and click "Data and Storage." Then simply find the last option on the list and check the box next to “Reduce data usage”.
