Surface Studio or iMac: Which is the winner?

A few weeks ago, Microsoft introduced its ace up its sleeve to compete with the iMac - not to be confused with the newly launched Macbook Pro, announced on October 27. Microsoft Surface Studio will be a workstation for creative professionals, a computer that can become a kind of digital whiteboard, something already done by Apple's iMac. But which one is the best? Surface Studio or iMac? We separated some of the main points and made the comparison that you can read below!

Surface Studio or iMac: Which one has the best hardware?

No matter what the purpose, it's always important to have powerful hardware to drive your work. Microsoft Surface Studio will be released in the market with a sixth generation Intel quad-core processor. On the other hand, the iMac 27-inch model has a similar processor, but the 21.5-inch model has a previous-generation processor that can be upgraded.

Both computers have high-end graphics cards, but Surface Studio wins because it will bring Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M cards faster than AMD Radeon R9. However, it is worth remembering that both computers can receive better cards, purchased separately. Despite the few differences in performance, the hardware winner is Surface Studio, considering that it has the advantage of being a newer product than iMac.

Surface Studio or iMac: Which one has the best design?

Considering the use of workstations, it is important that their design makes life easier for their users, offering flexibility and maneuverability. Microsoft's Surface has a thinner screen than iMac, but Apple's computer has a slimmer desktop. The Surface has a 637.35mm x 438.9mm x 12.5mm screen and a 250mm x 220mm x 32.2mm base. The iMac has a screen of 516 mm x 650 mm x 55 mm and the base has a depth of 203 mm. The Microsoft computer weighs 9.56 kg while the Apple computer weighs 9.54 kg.

However, the Surface Studio screen is connected with something called Zero Gravity Hinge, which allows you to move the monitor to any angle. That is, you can lay it flat to do your work directly on the screen with a digital pen and then return it to its original position without any problems. Although iMac will gain weight and be smaller overall, not having that possibility gives Surface Studio the win in design as well.

Surface Studio or iMac: Which one has the best screen?

The 27 inch iMac Retina 5K display is one of the best on the market. It allows resolution up to 5120 x 2880 pixels and supports millions of colors. Surface Studio is also not far behind, with a PixelSense touch screen with a resolution of up to 4500 x 3000 pixels, allowing up to 13.5 million simultaneous pixels on your screen. In addition, the Microsoft computer recognizes up to 10 simultaneous touch screen prints. That is, it recognizes all your fingers, even if you touch the screen with everyone at the same time.

Surface Studio's touch screen has functionality that can greatly improve the lives of artists and designers: it has buttons to change the color pattern instantly. Despite its features, iMac still has better resolution than Surface Studio, winning its first round.

Surface Studio or iMac: Which one has the best accessories and connectivity?

Even though they are super complete, both computers need to accept a good range of accessories and have good connectivity. To begin the comparison, it is worth noting that both are sold with a Bluetooth-connected keyboard and mouse. Check out the possible connections on each of the desktops:

Surface Studio or iMac: Which is the winner?

Surface Studio has won in hardware and design, while iMac wins on screen and in price, considerably lower than Microsoft's desktop. In terms of connection and functionality both are tied, resulting in a tie in general, it is up to the buyer to decide which is best for you.

If you can invest in a powerful machine with the ability to work directly on the screen, go to Surface. If you don't have that much capital available and don't need these additional resources, iMac remains a powerful and wise bet. Which one do you think is the best?
